Pneumonia Trends May Be Due to Coding Changes

چکیده
WASHINGTON – Proposed DSM-5 criteria for sleep-wake disorders include dropping the DSM-IV’s “primary insomnia” diagnosis in favor of “insomnia disorder,” and decreasing use of the term “not otherwise specified.” The changes reflect a move away from the need to make casual attribution between coexisting disorders and also the overall DSM-5 shift toward more data-driven diagnostic criteria, said Dr. Charles F. Reynolds III, professor of geriatric psychiatry, neurology, and neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh. “Sleep-wake disorders” is one of 13 diagnostic categories that are undergoing revision from the DSM-IV to the DSM5, slated for publication in May 2013. Dr. Reynolds is chair of the seven-member Sleep-Wake Disorders Work Group that devised the proposed diagnostic criteria, which – along with the rest of the DSM-5 proposed criteria – is now open for a Pneumonia Trends May Be Due to Coding Changes

Mortality reduction among pneumonia patients still substantial despite the impact of coding changes.
BACKGROUND Accounting for changes in coding practices may be important in analyzing trends based on administrative data. Several studies have demonstrated large reductions in mortality over time among pneumonia patients. However, a recent study suggested that this reduction may have been an artifact of case definition because more of the highest-risk patients were being coded under alternative ...
متن کاملIncreasing burden of community-acquired pneumonia leading to hospitalisation, 1998–2014
BACKGROUND Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in many countries but few recent large-scale studies have examined trends in its incidence. METHODS Incidence of CAP leading to hospitalisation in one UK region (Oxfordshire) was calculated over calendar time using routinely collected diagnostic codes, and modelled using piecewise-linear Poisson regressi...

Pneumonia is an important cause of illness and death in England. To describe trends in pneumonia hospitalizations, we extracted information on all episodes of pneumonia that occurred from April 1997 through March 2005 recorded in the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database by searching for International Classification of Diseases 10th revision codes J12-J18 in any diagnostic field. The age-s...

Background and Aim: Pneumonia is now one of the most important causes of childhood mortality in developing countries like Iran. The increased susceptibility to pneumonia, particularly in malnourished children of developing countries, is postulated to be due to reduction in cellular immunity. One of the reasons for reduced immunological competence in malnourished children may be zinc deficie...
متن کاملICD coding changes and discontinuities in trends in cause-specific mortality in six European countries, 1950-99.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate how often coding changes between and within revisions of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) complicate the description of long-term trends in cause-specific mortality. METHODS Data on cause-specific mortality between 1950 and 1999 for men and women aged 60 and older were obtained from Denmark, England and Wales, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden...
